Mount Saint Mary’s University has named its 2018 undergraduate commencement speaker.
Va Lecia Adams Kellum is the president and CEO of St. Joseph Center, a sponsored institution of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (founders of Mount Saint Mary’s University.) Adams Kellum joined St. Joseph Center in 2008 and during her tenure the agency has nearly tripled in size, expanded its range of services and broadened its geographic reach to include underserved communities in South Los Angeles. Under Adams Kellum’s leadership, St. Joseph Center has been a trailblazer in deploying integrated, multidisciplinary teams to help the most vulnerable homeless individuals obtain and maintain stable housing. Today, St. Joseph Center serves as the lead agency for the Coordinated Entry System for both families and individuals in L.A. County’s Service Planning Area 5.
Adams Kellum is also the former chair of the Westside Coalition and has represented Service Planning Area 5 on the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority Coordinating Council for many years. In 2017, she was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the newly established No Place Like Home Program Advisory Committee, which was developed to assist and advise the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum graduated with a BA from the University of Southern California and earned an MA from Ball State University before completing her PhD at Stanford University.
Mount Saint Mary’s undergraduate commencement ceremony will take place May 7 at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium near the University’s Doheny Campus. The ceremony will be streamed live in its entirety at msmu.edu/commencement.
